Chennai based artist Sandhya Manne creates oil paintings and intricate Zentangle ink drawings. She is India’s first Certified Zentangle Teacher, she has shared her knowledge and expertise, teaching Zentangle at Art centers and Community colleges in the USA before relocating to Chennai. She advocates Zentangle for mindfulness by offering regular corporate sessions, private and monthly group Zentangle workshops at her studio, as well as through engaging online courses touching the lives of aspiring artists both near and far.
The heart of my artistic theme for this collection is the ethereal beauty of flowers. Each bloom encapsulates profound symbolism, representing concepts from love and beauty to growth and resilience. Flowers bloom as a constant reminder of the cyclic nature of life, the fleeting beauty of existence, and the enduring essence of the human experience.
Oil paintings serve as the cornerstone of my artistic expression, enabling me to capture the elegance and beauty of flowers. The rich, luscious pigments of oil paints allow me to achieve depth and luminosity, establishing an intimate connection with the subject. Interwoven seamlessly within the oil paintings is the captivating art of Zentangle collage. The rhythmic repetition of intricate patterns and motifs, intertwined with floral elements, fosters a dynamic dialogue between the structured and the organic, the intentional and the spontaneous. This infusion breathes life into each piece, suffusing serenity and engaging viewers to find solace, as though they are wandering through a secret garden of the mind.
Texture plays a pivotal role in my process, as I use cold wax for medium with a palette knife to sculpt tactile surfaces on canvas. The interplay of light and shadow adds dimensions to my floral compositions, while the textural elements become a metaphor for the complexities and layers of emotions that flowers evoke, serving as a reminder of the depth within ourselves.
My artistic journey is an ever-evolving expedition of self-discovery —a symphony of colors, textures, and motifs resonating with the human soul. Through the dynamic interplay of Zentangle collage over the oil paintings, and the enduring theme of flowers, I aim to create a captivating visual experience that celebrates the beauty of life, the complexity of emotions, and the serenity of mindfulness. I invite viewers to immerse themselves in my collection, “Blossoms in Bloom: A Floral Fantasy,” and to wander through the secret garden of the mind.

The show was inaugurated on 22nd August 2023 by Shri. Prabhakar Kolte(Eminent Artist) in presence of Eminent Art Historian & Curator Mr. JohnyML (Guest of Honour) and other art collectors, patrons / connoisseurs and art promoters etc.
Shanmukh Rao Tamada aka Shanmukh Tamada hails from Vishakhapatanam and was trained under the famous sculptor, Ravinder Reddy. After his education in art at the Fine Arts College at Vizhag, Tamada came to Delhi to set up his studio and ever since he has been participating in group shows in Delhi and elsewhere. Recently he had had a successful solo exhibition titled ‘Autobiography of a Visual Mechanic’ curated by JohnyML at Bharat Art Space Gallery, Gurugram.
What makes Tamada different from his contemporaries is the choice of the medium; his favorite medium is industrially made foils. Multi-colored foils are used with dexterous coats of acrylic paints on canvases and Tamada works on them like an action painter in order to create psychedelic landscapes and images that keep changing shapes in the eyes of the beholder depending on the distance that the viewer takes from the painting.
Light and distance play a great role in Tamada’s paintings for the surfaces are created by multiple layers of foils. The deliberation in foil application is limited to the creation of surfaces and once the action starts he is a possessed man. He acts on his canvases till he gets the desired effect. According to him foils are industrial products that are flimsy and enduring alike.
“Looking at the foils I realized that they are like life; shiny, glittering, tough and so brittle. You need strength to break it at the same time a sharp object to could sear through it. I started off with the foils on an experimental basis almost a decade back and now that has become the most comfortable medium for me,” says Tamada.
“In Tamada’s works the precariousness is not what the result that he looks for. Instead, he likes to reveal the possibilities of a space that is at once light and heavy by virtue of the material and the method. Knowing that the works of art are created by the extremely thin and feather-light foils, the viewer feels the lightness of the painterly surface; this feeling is added by the fact that no heavy images are created by the artist on the canvases. They are light. But they look heavy as a whole because the viewer may feel incapacitated in discerning the totality of the images that glitter and fade, depending on the ken of approach. The painterly surfaces that Tamada creates are alluring and enticing, exactly the way the sharpest knives and the softest silks are. The latter two impart a feeling of anxiety mixed with pleasure; something that could be connected with speed and hormonal high,” writes Johny ML in the catalogue essay written for ‘Pleasurable Anxieties’.

This show was inaugurated on 30th May 2023 by Gourmoni Das in the presence of Tanuja Rane, Prof. Vishwanath Sable, Prakash Rajeshirke, Nilesh Kinkale, Apurva Nandi, Hansodnya Tambe, Smita Kinkale, Tathi Premchand.
Vibing with the aura of a heritage aesthetic existence & the aspiration of a highly advanced future and the metamorphosis into that tomorrow, the Millenismal takes you back in time as much as it connects to the present. Curated by Artist and Art Curator Smita Kinkale, the exhibition tells stories from different walks of life, like a metre of a poetic expression sung by all together.
It is like getting lost in an artistic direction on a journey of discovering the elements we had left in the most sacred corners of our childhood memories. What makes this exhibition special is how the artists have created different versions of the same reality we all hold dearly within us, yet give us a way of exploring more with every artwork.
Belonging to the same time, yet coming from different places (geographic areas & cultures), the four artists enrich the exhibition by bringing together different journeys whose core essence perfectly syncs into one family sentiment of growing apart, yet together; connected by substantial values and an innovative future.
With four different forms of expression — printmaking, ceramics, painting, & sculpture — the four artists (Anupama Dey, Ashwathi Avinash, Bhaskarjyoti Gogoi, Dattaram Nerurkar) have created a multiverse of experiences that balance traditional design with a contemporary approach, thus creating the rhythm through various elements of design, without limiting mediums & forms.
Anupama Dey
She worships Printmaking by portraying her real-life experiences through diverse techniques and methods. Growing up in a rural setup in the countryside, coexisting finely with human life, her perspective of involving often forgotten portions makes her prints purely relatable. A house lizard smoothly merging with other everyday elements will bring a smile to your face, truly redefining coexistence where we take it for granted.
With the belief that learning is a lifelong journey of possibilities, her exposure to forms of performing arts like music & dance, adds rhythm to her style and form of work. The depth of thought is visible through the natural aesthetics analogous to time and space, today, yesterday & tomorrow, depicting the ever-relatable parts of living.
Ashwathi Avinash
Her passion for bringing sentient dimensions to the multitude of her childhood experiences brought her closer to expressing herself through ceramics. Belonging to a culture that appreciates the earthy existence of the joy of living, her childhood playthings form the essence of her inspiration to express time in its most innocent, yet charismatic way.
Her artworks spark an element of interest and you are in another world as much as you start feeling good about reality.
The baking techniques she uses, connect to the old days of simple living and the texture translates into telling a story of the past that is eternally relevant and special. Her love for the functional utility of art pieces makes them merge into the space they occupy along with establishing the distinct identity of their aesthetic experience.
Bhaskarjyoti Gogoi
Crafting three-dimensional details into the artwork, his paintings look like the pages of a life-size story book inviting you into his world of nature and emotions. Coming from regions that are blessed with a divine natural world, his work speaks through profound emotions, textures, and nature-inspired elements that stunningly capture your attention and you would get lost in his work for hours, and yet find it interesting every new day or at times, moment.
His brushstrokes create a symphony on the canvas. You can truly find yourself in the story, and at times as an observer appreciating the art with the overwhelming emotions, flowing in sync with the aesthetics.
Dattaram Nerurkar
Rooted in beauty and speaking stories of time & space that are eternally pertinent, his artworks are abstract sculptures crafted from naturally found materials like wood, stone, and metal. The geometry of shapes and forms take you to a world beyond your regular curiosity. The three-dimensional melody of the sculpture is a realisation that an emotion can be expressed through abstract forms of being and yet become relatable to the deepest possible context of existence.
Aged wood and the stones that hold a world in themselves speak of boundless emotions and become poetry in multi-dimensions. Intentional edges and cuts, and at times, burns, add elements of reality to his artworks, thus harmoniously mixing them in the space around them along with establishing their abstract existence with aesthetic expressions.
Millenismal
It’s about time & space, and it is about depth, experiences, and expressions. Millenismal is an odyssey of each of these artists independently & in conjunction with the depiction of the past, present, & future. The framework of their thoughts expressed through form, shape, texture, colour, and pattern manifests through distinct identities, yet materialising in one ecosystem celebrated as Millenismal.
It is like an interlude of music that gives us the breathing space to celebrate the time that is gone, is yet to be, and the time that we live in. It’s a reality that frees your imagination as much as it enchants it, making Millenismal – a melange of reminiscence & reality, and a little more.

Since the early times, Indian culture has always given utmost importance to animals. Whether in temples carved sculptures, caves or even in literature animals were included. Thus were born fables, morals stories, folklores and so on.
When I think of animals, my heart reaches out to a childhood memory that has been etched in my mind. We were taught poetry in school, named Punyakoti. Punyakoti was the name of a cow, and her story revolved around truth and sacrifice.
As the story goes, she once promises to return to an old hungry tiger as a prey, after she has fed her young one. Despite her calf and siblings moaning and coaxing her not to return, she does so believing in her virtues. The tiger, moved by her integrity, salutes her and gives up his own life, while freeing himself of the curse he would have invoked for killing such an innocent and truthful cow.
The emotions of this particular poem have stayed with me since then and thus the picturesque scenes of cattle outside temples, the Nandi inside the temple and bullocks dressed up for special festivities have always enchanted me. These beautiful scenes in real time have inspired my current exhibition “SIDHHA” connoting the meaning pure.
Through this exhibition, I have manifested the importance of the cow and the Nandi in our great culture.

About House of Gods:
Do we have any meaningful control over our own lives or are we mere puppets dangling from the strings maneuvered by an ever-powerful entity? This is the proverbial and insistent question Deepak Mer has asked through his paintings – House of Gods.
Peer closely and you will discover a host of images hiding within/behind other images. It is a wonderful maze, a labyrinth of consciousness taking you to places the mind finds hard to fathom with its limited span of attention.
Some paintings will reveal the Kundalini Shakti, some the Nag bandha, another will depict something as simple as a compass. However, simple or complex the painting seems to be, it will always lure you to gaze and will divulge you secrets that at first defy the eye.
The main subjects are the figurines which are human bodies seemingly suspended in the air, using telling gestures, making you wonder whether they are asking the proverbial yet timeless question that man has still not been able to answer: “Does destiny exist? Is it all fated in the end? Or can we influence fate’s maneuvers? Should we live by our own rules or would romancing the Gods cut a better deal?” After all, the mystery of what we are meant to do here is yet to be deciphered.
All works are an enthralling concoction of the artist’s keen attention to detail and reveal a curious mind, a vivid imagination and his trademark talent of treading the unbeaten path. The paintings are a proud display of skill with the entire range of media available in terms of shades and hues and are the epitome of the ‘multi-layered’ genre in painting, in the end, creating a beautiful spectrum of textures and surfaces. And, thereby, hangs a tale.
This collection is Deepak’s most celebrated series and has enjoyed patronage over the years, so much so that some of these paintings are now adorning the walls in several countries other than India.

Vidya Balan inaugurates Padma Shri Sudharak Olwe’s Firefly Lavani photo exhibition at Nine Fish Art Gallery

Mumbai-based documentary photographer Padma Shri Sudharak Olwe’s Firefly, an exhibition of photographs, artefacts and performance, on ‘Lavani’ – a traditional dance form of Maharashtra opened at the Nine Fish Art Gallery in Byculla, Mumbai.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Vidya Balan, with attendees including celebrities, artists, journalists and curators alike, including Parvez Damania, Anup Jalota, Rupali Suri, Niharica Raizada, Vilas Shinde and Pablo Bartholomew among others.
The 45 photographs that are documented over 20 years by Sudharak Olwe attempt to capture the ‘lavanya’ (beauty), struggles and journey of the social lives of these folk artistes and look beyond the popular perception of the traditional dance form. “I want to share their art and life in my photos,” elaborated Sudharak, who still continues to document the Lavani artistes.
More about Sudharak Olwe, who has been marking a new global space for Indian photography, with exhibitions in Malmo (Sweden), Lisbon, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Washington, Dhaka, Mumbai and Delhi among others. Olwe is known for his extraordinary work capturing in both rural and urban communities, presenting tales of resilience, courage, and change. In 2005, Olwe was one of the four awardees for National Geographic’s “All Roads Photography Program: In 2016, he received the Padma Shri, one of highest civilian awards awarded by the Government of India.
In the current exhibition, Sudharak Olwe’s timeless frames pay a tribute to this traditional art form that has contributed tremendously to the development of Marathi folk theatre. Prominent Lavani traditional folk artistes from Solapur were honoured at the event, the Lavani artistes shared their stories through their energetic performance as well. The proceeds helped the education of children of Lavani dancers.
Along with the photographs by Sudharak Olwe, artefacts curated by Gourmoni Das are also on display.
For the uninitiated, ‘Lavani’ is a traditional dance form that originated in Maharashtra in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lavani is performed on public stage, and is a performative tradition practiced by a certain set of communities consisting of interactive gestures, and songs and noted for its biting dialogues often toned with socio-political satire; the dancers are always agile and attentive to the audience’s reactions.

He has displayed his work in several prominent art exhibitions in Solo as well as group / invited / juried shows in cities in Michigan and Pennsylvania in USA and Darpan Art Gallery, Pune, India etc. He has been awarded many prizes/awards and recognition from several art promotional institutions of international repute.
His works are in proud collection of many prominent art collectors. His present series reveals a paint free paint like effect. These vibrant and colourful representational art works have been made by him using multiple scraps of fabric as the colour palette. Various textured and coloured fabrics are cut into numerous pieces that are then either glued or fused using heat and bonding medium onto a canvas in layers till the desired shape, form and visual perspectives are achieved with relevant details. He has adorned his works with the essence of the beauty of nature and real life still objects. He has endeavoured to blend the fabrics in such varied types and textures in unison to create this unique paint-free painting like visual effect in landscapes, floral and still life objects along with abstracts also being an interpretation of his creative mind and instincts. His inspiration from childhood has developed into a passion and stress buster. It has won him a lot of appreciation and applause from the art loving community.

About Aparna Deshpande
A picture speaks a thousand words,’ goes a saying that Aparna Deshpande seems to prove absolutely right. A natural dancer with vivid imagination, Aparna, at a very young age, with limited scope for communication in a regular way, began to immerse in the world of colours that threw up enchanting visual stories. Supportive parents –Kalpana and D P Nerkar – identified her innate talent, at a very young age, and encouraged her to explore and experiment. Aparna, post her schooling, pursued a diploma course in interior designing and decoration from the noted L S Raheja College, Mumbai.
She practiced painting on various surfaces and played with Japanese papers in creating pop-up greeting cards by employing various permutations and combinations. Her journey into the world of art continued with cartoon illustrations, landscape and portrait paintings, she has now cocooned out of and into abstract and surrealism and is now making her own mark in these art forms. Comfortable with oils, acrylics, watercolours etc, Aparna finds her paintings to be the manifestations of her inner core and an expression of collective experience. Her paintings, at times, are projections of the unique feelings stored and imprinted in her heart. Lively bursts of passionate colours and bold strokes with delicate renditions in her paintings are a reflection of her unreserved, genial personality.
“God has infused Aparna with immense ability to speak through her paintings,” said celebrated cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar. “The almighty has shut one door but opened a vast roof of aesthetics and creative talent to manifest and spread joy.”
Aparna paints to spread positive message in this world. Aparna’s collection titled “ Melodies of Nature “, is a beautiful amalgamation of nature, emotions and the divine. Her paintings start off with youthful shapes and colours and transform into a novel of thoughts. Her creative paintings and photo realistic pictures stand out for their size and quality. . Aparna orchestrates multiple figures and forms from nature, on the canvas, to give birth to another larger forms with underlying concepts. Her unique arrangements of human and natural elements mutate into mesmerizing treat for the eyes. One truly feels the need to keep revisiting her paintings, only to obtain a different perspective each time.

Nature Fights The Battle For Cancer Kids Through Sanjukta Arun’s Painted Ballads

The earth is her muse. And Sanjukta Arun paints her ballads on the canvas. Whether it be her series on the mighty waves that define how life is a series of waves to be embraced and overcome by surfing through them, or the forests where we find solace seeing the tree remain a tree, Sanjukta walks her life’s paths unseen to the world hidden in the depth of her creations. It is those answers Sanjukta shares with the world.
Painted Ballads is a collection of poems on canvas on display at the Nehru Centre from Nov 29- Dec 5.
The funds raised through the sale and auction of the paintings will be utilised for the treatment of children suffering from cancer.
On December 3, a special celebration for a batch of 20 children suffering from cancer will be organised, where the children get to paint and showcase their skill for painting. It will be followed by a magic show where gifts and goodies galore. The artist has appealed to art lovers to come forward and support the bravehearts.
“This is merely a small gesture to brighten the lives of these children. We should all come together to brighten their lives. When a child sees a ray of hope, it helps them fight the disease with renewed hope. That is all we seek — to see them emerge winners.”
Adds Anita Peter, Executive Director, CPAA, “Sanjukta Arun has been supporting cancer survivors for years through the sale and auction of her paintings. Cancer pushes both the patients and their families into trauma due to the high expenditure, pain and pressure. The disease is ugly and there is the constant need to remind families that life is beautiful.and worth fighting for. Beautiful people like Sanjukta inspire not just the children and their families but common people to be the change!”

The inspiring force behind the works by B Meghmala, Deepak Mukherjee, Monalisa Parikh, Namrita Nagra, Paridhi Jain, Sayali Nagarkar, Sudha Ramkrishnan, Vikram Bhatti, Vinayak Nigam and Vishal Sabley is their belief and faith that prompted them to create an impressive and wondrous works of art which generates mystical aura and spiritual vibrations around them. The amount of detailing in sculptures by Devel Sharma, Pankaj Gadakh, Soumen Kar, and Sujit Kumar Mukhopadhyay
is simply phenomenal and these sculptures are surely going to be an extra attraction in the art fair.
The Baroque animal painting tradition originated around seventeenth century in the western art world have found many followers across the world who portray animals, sometime using landscape as the background. Artist Alpana Dangi, Anna Kurian, Dipti Kumar, Rushan Shah and Shankar Rajput seems to be mesmerised by the beauty and power of different animals such as horses, bulls, elephants and stags. The other artists who got fascinated by wildlife are Haripriya Kulkarni, Jalpa Patel, Poonam Juvale, Praveena Parepalli and Saket Arbhi; their artworks are the visual treat for wild-life lovers visiting art fair. Viewers can select beautiful paintings from a charming variety of flying bird paintings executed dexterously by Anrita Basu, Bhaduri Shah Baria, Sanjivanee Bhoir and Shankar Pamarthy.
Richness and depth can be achieved in the subtle manipulation of light and shadow without colour. A world without colour is nonetheless rich in texture as the artist Akshata Shetty, Beena Surana, Chaitali Bareja Sharma, Ena Tondon, Insiya Patrawala, Kanishkar Mehra, Khurram Amir, Krish Nandi, Krupali Gondhalekar, Madhavi Bhaskar, Nikhil Usare, Raj Kumar, Rupali Mhatre and Vijay Kumawat explore a variety of themes and styles in a monochromatic pallet. The common thread that binds the works of Christina Ravi, Deepa Siddharth, Doyel Sinha, Kirthi Shetty, Kumaraswami B, Manju Das, Alpa Mistry, Namrata Bagwe, Priyanka Singh, Samridhi Sharma, Swarnajeet Kaur and Tara Isa is their female protagonists presented in various context and situations.
The use of geometric forms to create rhythmic patterns and fluid forms in the works of Annarapu Narendra, Jyoti Sharma, Mohit Jangid, Nirja Shah, Prachi Gala, Princy Jain, Uchit Turakhia and Vaishali Chanda is an experiment in illusion art that trick the eye and mind to perceive images different than what they are on the pictorial surface. The assemblage by Rohan Kunthale, Serigraph by Trishna Bhati and woodcuts by three generation of artists in Dubey family, black & white photograph by Sangram Naik, and surreal compositions by Aditi Khandelwal, Kaushal Parikh, Kunwar S S Punwar, Madhu Kuruva, Naveena Ganjoo and Subarna Bagchi compels the viewer to take a second look at them. Female nudes when done by female artist acquire the different dimension; this is demonstrated in the works of Meenakshi Shukla and Payal Moni.
Portraits displayed in the Mumbai Art Fair by Nilima Dani and Vineet Kaur and stylised works by B Narahari, Kashiram Pinjare and Saurabh Dhingare are the specimen of matured handling of subject with witty use of colour composition. Plethora of artworks by artist Anita Mukherjee, Atma Shyam, Bharati Hingane, Devvrat Singh Sengar, Divya Menon, Ramashankar Mishra, Shankar Sharma, Kanan Khant, Karishma Surve, Manjusha Kanade, Meena Raghavan, Navin Agarwal, Nikita Dani, Pinal Panchal, Rubina Hasan, Shalaka Patil, Shruti Kasana, Soni Singh, Sreenivasa Ram and Supriya Kaluskar are the form of tradition art or at least inspired by our traditional arts like Pichwai, Warli Art, Gond Art, Mughal style, and miniature art styles. Artists exhibiting in the Mumbai Art Fair Hiya Juthani, Nayana Patel, Nilesh Upadhyay, Pavani Nagpal, Praveen Kaveri, Purvi Lohana, Rhea Narkar, Seema Oza, and Shivani Patidar approach reality through the use of seemingly abstract looking colour patches and shades to create something as comprehensible as if it is real but still has dreamy quality to it akin to pseudo realism.
The enchantingly luminous water colour pieces by Gitanjali Shah, Mukta Kadam, Niyati Amlani and Shyam Karri combines the reflection of the white paper along with its texture exploiting the translucent tenderness of watercolour; the effect is wistful! Though Mukta Kadam do not fall in the temptation of using water colour’s qualities to boost its visual appeal but takes her artworks much more beyond merely what is overtly visible; they need multiple readings to dig deeper in her visual connotations. Artists Anjali Prabhakar, Antra Shrivastava, Bandana Kumari, Bhamini Sarda, Rajitha, Eshmeet Thapar, Jyoti Singh, Medha Nerurkar, Neerja Kujur, Preeti Shaw, Priya Kataria, Purnima Walunj, Riya Nahata, Sayed Bakar and Vinod Venkapalli visually communicate and symbolize fundamental truths of their subjects through the symbolic compositions.
Mumbai art fair is a sort of dawn for the independent artists; it forms a hub, a burgeoning estuary for the creative alignments of every kind; do come and be part of it in some way or the other. After the long pandemic, art fair works as a crucible of hyperactivity and generates enough energy to make a difference in the current art market.

Najma Akhter’s 11th Solo Show Lyrical Abstraction – Bangladesh At The Core Well-Received At The Jehangir Art Gallery Mumbai

Najma Akhter’s Lyrical Abstraction: Bangladesh at the Core was on display at the Jehangir Art Gallery 3 from Oct 18-24. The exhibition exploreed nature and human settlements through abstraction as a method. The artist presents the lyrical aspect of Bangladesh through the free-flowing strokes and texture as a context in this exhibition. Bangladesh is known to be a green and fertile land for centuries. It is a riverine country. Rivers create new lands and wash away localities to be rebuilt by the resilient people. The landscape is constantly evolving creating a multitude of visual possibilities that an abstract painter would translate and transfer to the surface of the canvas. This abstraction differs from the west or the grand tradition of abstract expressionism, although connected.
For the uninitiated, Najma Akhter is a modern artist from Bangladesh and is one of those few whose forte is abstract painting. She was born on February 14, 1959. An MFA from the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University, Najma Akhter has exhibited around the globe her expressive paintings, which mostly are acrylic on paper or canvas. Originally a student of Oriental Arts, an area where too she received great appreciation. She started experimenting with abstract visual language in 2003 and toured with her vibrant collection to a number of places like Penang, Malaysia to Patras, Greece. She has been a member of the jury of an international art expo in Sofia, Bulgaria. The artist is also an assistant professor of secondary and higher secondary level fine arts at the University Laboratory School and College. Institute of Education Research. Dhaka University.
Najma Akhter used to write distinctive art reviews for reputed dailies before concentrating solely on her paintings. Her works are in collections of a number of organisations (including government offices, National Museum, Shilpakala Academy, Banks and diplomatic missions) and private collectors, at home and abroad. Najma has received runners-up in Bulgaria’s prestigious International Mixed Media Exhibition and Poet Abdul Hai Mashreky Gold Medal and Shilpacharja Gold Medal.

What happens when you search solitude within the construct of an artistic practice?
Subhash Awchat’s present series of watercolours is a reflection of time, its structure, not measured by a watch but one that is witnessed when we fall humble into a magnificent landscape. In French we would say “aquarelles au fils du temps” or watercolours over the passage of time.
We now face an artist with age. Loneliness is a facet of time. The pandemic allowed us to face our interiority with great intimacy. Awchat was left alone without access to his acrylics or his canvases. A pad of watercolour paper was all that he had access to. A pad gifted to his grandson and for colours he had basic watercolours that were fabricated here in India. The command on colour and form-forming is urgent when the brush touches the paper you need to draw with water or the images turn to smudges. Awchat displayed much ability in handling colour and form. He changed his palette.
Illness in old age is always a transformation. Subhash has spent time near a lake in Bhor on the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. This plateau-esque terrain with valleys and a reservoir is stationary in time. Watercolours from here capture Awchat’s view of the Sky as blue. He sees homes dwarfed under the horizon of the Sun. His monk-like figures run under colourful buntings that have affinities of form with geometrical abstraction. We realise how he uses space in his canvases; a particular work divided the paper into a palette of pastels. He is not using ochre. Brown is not to be seen, instead, bright Yellows, Pinks and Light Blues fill spaces where he doesn’t find forms. A social person finally finds in the landscape a form to draw solitude.

Metaphorical Sculptures of Asish Das
Baroda based 56 years old, Asish Kumar Das, is one of the outstanding sculptors working in India today especially in the domain of using human figures and animal imageries. Presently we are witnessing in our country the phenomena of projects like installations and such ventures which require collaboration of creative artists as well as technical persons or undertakings where deliberately assembled artists and traditional craftsmen just put together some hybrid patchwork. Amidst such an environment, Asish Das stands out as a multi faceted sculptor who has expertise in all aspects of the bronze casting processes which continues to be his medium for his fascinating, stimulating, captivating, mind arresting sculptures. His works are as much complicated in terms of bronze casting and finishing processes as much as they are intriguing in terms of conceptualization. For an artist with such in depth and subtle creative thinking, it is commendable to observe how he manages to sustain his creative impulses through the long complex technical procedures involved for its concretization or objectification.
Asish Das has intense empathy for the natural animal and human forms so that he does not take recourse to distortions, though he modifies the proportions as required to give them the anticipated elongation, slimness or slight attenuation at the body joints. Consequently his animal and human bodies are graceful with discrete modelling, we as viewers could call them ‘lyrical’ or ‘sukumar’ , corresponding to the ‘Kaishiki Vritti ‘ of Sanskrit language. However they are also ‘serious’ or ‘solemn’, i.e. ‘Gambhir’ or possessing ‘ Audharya ‘ , dignity. Although apparently Asish Das portrays aspiring human beings engaged with daily existential activities in their lives in this world, yet he does not take recourse to oppressed or suffering imageries. The human figures, their faces, limbs, draperies are very patiently modelled in clay and subsequently “hollow casted” in bronze metal using, “the lost wax” process. This technique is often quite complicated when the sculptural form has additional details, such as projecting elements, which require separate channels for pouring hot molten metal during the casting stage. Even when he portrays elegantly modelled animal forms, they too reflect the human aspirations theme, by transforming their faces into those of humans.
Actually the human aspirations as Asish’s thematic concern, are also implied in several sculptures in which the human figure is sometimes associated with a bird, thus a bird like form with long beak is attached around the waist of a man (see ‘The Royal Flight’). Or the man is attempting to fly like a bird, thus he rises on his toes, giving an agile stance to the rising figure. A pair of small metal wings is attached to the shoulders (see ‘The Feminine Upthrust’ ). Alternatively a large pair of wings, shaped in wood planks is hinged with the bronze casted upper back, giving an impression of powerful wings (see ‘The Blissful Draught’ ) . Here we may also draw attention to Asish’s amazing sensitivity of ‘detailing’ such as an exquisite small bird motif with spread out wings, which are delineated on the human torso and the limbs and given buffed polish, so that they shine like gold, amidst the contrasting greenish colour of the patina. In the “ Vanquishing Thought – II”, the figure stands on the toe of left leg with raised right leg, as if the figure is already air-borne. The spread out arms have the gesture of releasing an arrow from the bow. A thin metal sheet covers part of the groin in the front and spreads behind the back as a foil. This metal sheet is perforated with cut outs of the same bird form in fine contours, creating a pleasant contrast with the glittering bird forms on the body. No doubt to render these motifs with finesse requires special skills, which the sculptor has inherited from the fact that he belongs to a family of jewellers. At the same time, this design motif of the soaring bird has a creative purpose which is metaphorical.
Asish’s ingenious command of the balance in his sculptural forms is marvellously arrived at in the manner the human body is placed horizontally in mid space supported by a spiral form in the circular centre of which is placed the three dimensional earthly globe ( see “ Frolicking with Nature”). Another unique example is that of a human figure in dynamic upside down position like that of an acrobat supporting the base or the earthly surface with thumbs of each hand. In this case also spiral form serves as the base ( see “ Bonded with Nature”, bronze and aluminium).
The human figure metaphorically transformed by adding some kind of drapery ( as part of a particular type of costume) along with some details attached to it, thus the associated accessories implying a certain expression or a type of specific character, has been explained by Asish himself, as an unconscious reflection of having seen in his childhood in a Bengal village, the folk actors impersonating a typical character wearing appropriate costume and facial make up, such as long hair and beard. The folk actors are called “ Bahurupi”, thus some of the sculptures comprising of nearly full size human form, are like a “ Bahurupi” impersonating a “ character”. ( see “ I Pave My Destiny – III”).
The combination of naturalism and simplicity with a certain eternal calmness of Asish’s sculptural works, also remind of similar qualities in the ancient Egyptian monumental sculptural forms. The easy flow of line along the contours of simplified abstracted volumes of the Sarnath Buddha images of the Gupta period ( 5th and 6th centuries) is a quality of India’s great classical sculptural style, that has apparently been unconsciously absorbed by Asish Das in his sculptural forms. His handling of delicate surface modelling of the human body along with the equipoise of the human form, links his sculptural forms with the early twentieth century Bengali sculptor, Fanendranath Bose, who had been commissioned more than half a dozen sculptures of Indian male and female workers by the late Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad. Asish Das’s work, through the last three decades, has grown and matured consistently in a meaningful direction with surprising variations and creative innovations.

Akhil Chandra Das is a very important sculptor of our country, who evolved his own form during the end part of the decade of 1990-s. Based in Kolkata where he was born in 1968 he has extended his field of work throughout India. An M.V.A. in sculpture from M.S.University, Baroda he has assimilated in his works the traditional indigenous norms with the contemporary global values. He works mainly in mixed media of bronze and wood along with few other mediums. His works are primitivist, fantasy-oriented, very often inclining towards surrealism. Through these formal structures he posits deep-rooted rebellion against social decadence, cultural hypocrisy, exploitation of various kinds by capitalist powers and erosion of moral and social values. He develops his form from his serious commitments, sympathy and love towards humanity. The decadence of human values during the contemporary times disturbs him to the core of sensibility and the pain generated out of it is developed into his sculptural forms.
His first solo exhibition was held at Jahangir Art Gallery in 2002. But his participation in various important group-exhibitions started earlier. He has participated in several group shows like Harmony show, National Exhibition and Time and Material show organised by Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata and Art Konsult at Stainless Gallery, New Delhi among others. He participated in Gen Next I and II exhibitions organised by Aakriti Gallery in 2006 and 2007 respectively. He received junior scholarship of Lalit Kala Academy in 1999-2000, Lalit Kala Research Grant, 1995 and National scholarship 1995-1997 and 2000. All these participations and achievements indicate the excellence of his talent as a young artist that has developed to the full during the later course of his progress.
Since the emergence of modernism in Indian sculpture primitive form and technique have played a vital role in devising the identity of sculpture. The works of two pioneering artists in this field, Ramkinkar and Meera Mukherjee are very much exemplary in this context. During the decades of 1940-s 1960-s the sculptors tried to assimilate the indigenous classical forms along with the Western modernist trends. A serious urge to build up an identity through synthesis of local and global values has made the sojourns of our sculpture very significant making our sculptural forms vibrant and unique. During the decade of 1990-s our social values have changed drastically owing to emergence of economic globalisation and assimilation of post-modern world outlook. The forms and expressions of sculptures have also changed considerably since that decade. Conceptualism has turned to be the general trend of expression. Use of multimedia has also been a trend.
The sculptures of Akhil Chandra Das show all these trends of 1990-s. We may look at a few of his works to have an idea of his forms and philosophy. His forms express the agony that the contemporary life contains. Along with this agony there is also an ecstasy to surpass the limits of existential dilemma and to be united with the unbounded expanse of the universe. In one of his works he builds a beast very much disproportionate in physical structures that cries in extreme agony raising its two hind legs. It reveals fantasy that turns to be the symbol of existential pain. A creature with human body and head of a buffalo walks holding a horn of the beast. Here fantasy is transformed towards surrealism. In another piece a calm and contemplative human being stands. His hands are extended to indicate his submission to the divine. There are parts of circular forms scattered throughout his body that may be taken as the symbol of universal infinity.
Violence is expressed in various forms. A semi naked man stands on a wooden platform. He has chopped off his head with his own sword. He holds the sword with his two hands and raises it over his body. On this sword are placed three human heads arranged side by side. This is a form of surrealist fantasy that indicates the severity of violence presented in a plaintive disposition. In another piece a bearded saintly person stands on a platform. His body is covered with a sheet of cloth showing meticulously arranged folds of drapery. In his right hand he holds an ascetic’s bowl, which in Indian terms known as Kamandalu. The saint is proceeding towards worship or meditation. Here is an expression of spirituality very much Indian in nature.
Thus the sculptor Akhil Chandra Das postulates two opposing trends in his expressions. One is violence and the other spirituality. Being very much ingrained in indigenous spiritual values he extends his form towards a kind of rebellion, where he drastically lashes at the rotten reality of the contemporary times. The simultaneous assertion of these opposing values is a unique feature in his expressions whereby he attempts to realise the existential dilemma of the contemporary world.
Mrinal Ghosh.

His other works exemplify icons displaying the peculiarities of Satyayuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparyuga and Kaliyuga through eloquent and lucid works which definitely reveal the works based on 4 yugas and also the ultimate truth that the foundation and force behind force behind this astonishing creation is depicted through the beejfala of genesis held steadily in the hands of Yugandhara. ‘Life Witthin’ – Sangeeta Kumar Murthy
For Sangeeta Kumar Murthy, excellence is a continuous endeavour. She is not one to rest on her laurels, she continues to explore new frontiers and experiment with advanced concepts. Sangeeta says “The Pandemic has changed the way I look at my art, I have taken a fresh approach to my subjects, treatment and medium”. While the forms and expression may be different, what remains constant through her work is clarity and a meticulous eye for detail.
In Sangeeta’s latest series, ‘Life Witthin’, she has chosen the medium of pen and ink on paper and vibrant acrylic hues on canvas to create a visually appealing series of artworks. A noteworthy element of the series ‘Life Witthin’ is the beautiful depiction of fabrics. One can almost feel the texture and flow. Each of her works in the series retains a cohesive link to the central theme which is fluid curves and fine lines that balance each other. The artist’s paintings demonstrate her mastery over this genre which is a new addition to her already extensive portfolio.
The ‘Life Witthin’ series has multiple branches – Soul, Germination, Samanvay and Efflorescence. The ‘Soul’ series looks within, to find depth and the meaning of existence. ‘Germination’ demonstrates the evolution of thoughts, ideas and concepts, slowly awakening to the world around. ‘Samanvay’, progresses from exploring growth and life to seeking the equilibrium that creates harmony in the entire universe, be it between the masculine and feminine, yin & yang or between man and his maker. ‘Efflorescence’ pays tribute to the incredible spirit of mankind and its ability to emerge stronger while adapting to the ‘new normal’.
Another key element in this series, along with ‘environment’ is ‘women’ and they can be seen in various avatars. Interestingly, Sangeeta has painted women that don sinuous kimonos, flowery gowns and sharp jackets, in modern cosmopolitan forms, a reflection of the women of today, each balancing different roles in our society. The artist depicts the importance of manifesting hope and optimism in myriad forms and expressions while retaining a strong social context. The eye-catching spiritual undertones in these works highlight the regeneration of new thoughts and ideas in different elements of our interlinked world. Thus, we can see that the series portrays a wide range of elements and features, all nourished by the internal energy that is indeed the life-giving force.
The detailing of motifs and patterns compels attention. In several paintings, one can see the artist’s newly introduced colour palette consisting of grey and gentle tints of sepia, adding greater depth and nuances to her signature fine detailing. Almost print-like strokes and the purity of lines and forms that are a distinctive hallmark of Sangeeta Kumar Murthy’s paintings can also be observed.
